New NACAC Resources on Transfer Students
NACAC recently launched two new resources on student transfer including an online resource called the Transfer Knowledge Hub and a new Application Fee Waiver Form for Transfer Students. The Knowledge Hub provides research- and policy-to-practice information specifically for counseling and enrollment professionals working with transfer students.
The transfer pathway as a postsecondary option is more widespread than ever for today’s students. Data from the National Student Clearinghouse (2012) reveals that one-third of students who began their postsecondary education in the fall of 2006, transferred at least once before earning any degree. In addition, nearly half of all undergraduates today are enrolled in community colleges- the majority of whom express a desire to transfer.
We know that throughout their transitions from one college or university to the next, transfer students face unique challenges along their path to a postsecondary degree- including a longer and more difficult admission process and lower acceptance rates. Once transfer students do arrive on campus, they often lack the services and support they need for a successful transition. Institutions’ response to transfer students’ special counseling needs varies significantly. Assisting these students make these transitions and succeed is a critical task for all professionals within our colleges and universities.
